What is Breaking Silence?

Mental health is a growing concern in our community. Breaking Silence is designed to bring people together and create a safe space where individuals can express their experiences through art.

The exhibit opens with our First Friday Reception on Friday, September 4, from 5 to 7 PM. Then, join us for our special community program on Saturday, September 12, from 2 to 5 PM. These are two separate events, and everyone is welcome to attend either or both. Advance registration is required for the September 12 program. If you are submitting artwork and would like to attend the program as well, simply select the “Attending Program” option when completing your artwork entry form instead of registering separately for a ticket.

On September 12, experience powerful stories of resilience, hope, and healing through creative expression while supporting an issue that affects us all. This immersive community program features artwork from local artists, guest speakers, mental health resources and support, food and refreshments, and opportunities to learn more about the stories behind the art.

Before you leave, don’t forget to sign our Wall of Gratitude to share your appreciation for the first responders, local businesses, and community artists whose support and dedication help make this event possible.

About the creator

My name is Brittinay, and I was born and raised in Gettysburg, PA. Like many others, I never expected to face mental health challenges.

As a teenager, bullying, unhealthy relationships, and family struggles affected my mental health. I also experienced judgment and loneliness, often feeling it was easier to stay silent than explain what I was going through.

While studying psychology in college, I realized how many people struggle with mental health but are afraid to talk about it because of stigma. That inspired me to create this program—a space where people can feel supported, understood, and connected.

I’m grateful to the Adams County Arts Council for helping make this program possible. Through art and creativity, we can create a safe place for healing, self-expression, and conversation.

My hope is to make this an annual program that continues to raise awareness and helps more people feel seen, heard, and supported in our community.
